Community Gardens

Our mission is to enhance the lives of families through community-based educational and entrepreneurial programs. Community gardens serve both these important goals. Several years ago Sebastian requested land for a garden project from the village chief, the only person with the authority to grant land for projects in the village. Each year since improvements have been made and more garden plots added. Cultivating community gardens has increased sustainable food sources for the community and provided an opportunity for women to plant and care for their own plots.

These crops feed the women’s families and can be sold in the market. Women gardeners have learned efficient and effective means of irrigation. In the beginning they carried water in a jug on their heads holding five gallons of water. Thanks to project funding, there is now a convenient well, a water capture/storage tank, irrigation routes and foot-operated pumps with attached hoses — all methods that increase crop yields and maximize water usage. Secure fencing has been added to protect crops from predators.

What was once a dry, barren area, is now filled with bountiful gardens that benefit these women in a very profound way.
